980EXT OTDR is stuck in the booting up... How to solve the problem?

980EXT OTDR is stuck in the booting up... How to solve the problem? Please press the OTDR's physical power on/off button for at least 20 seconds until it displayed system update... Then, just wait, the OTDR itself can repair automantically. After it is done, OTDR will restart.

How to Test Splitters with Splitter OTDR?

It is difficult to test splitters by OTDR, especially to test high ratio splitters like 1: 64 or 1:128. Splitter is with high, so OTDR users have to use large pulse width to process the test, because if no large pulse, there will very lower back-scattering signal comes back OTDR for analysis, but once OTDR process testing with large pulse width, its accuracy will be worse. So, HOW to improve the accuracy is an essential issue. Good news is enginners in FirstFiber Technogies Company invested a good method to solve the problem and develop the new splitter OTDR which is good at Splitters testing.

Why Launch Cable Is needed for OTDR Testing

Launch cable, sometimes is called launch box, fiber reel, or bare fibers. It is acturally a longer fiber jumper, but with much lower insertion loss of both cable and its connectors.

OTDR 2 Points 5 Points Analysis Methods
2022-01-11  |  Eric

There are two ways to know exactly the loss at a point on an OTDR trace.
In the two-point method, AB two spots are taken at both ends of this point, the closer it is to this point, the better. Finally, the point to be tested is selected to obtain the loss at this point.
In the five-point method, take two points at each end of the test point, through the change of their slope, finally select the point to be tested, you can get the loss at this point.
In fact, the point selected by the OTDR cursor is calculated in this way, which is generally of little practical significance.

Optical Cable Identifier OCID FF-6800

FF-6800 Series Optical Cable Identifer is an intelligent instrument designed for the construction and maintenance of optical cable lines in optical communication system. In view of the complex wiring environment and the diffculty of locating faults during the construction and long-term use of optical cables, FF-6800 series can provide fast, effective and accurate fault solutions. When the target optical cable is bent or shaken, the optical cable identifer instrument can quickly capture the vibration signal and display it through waveform and sound, so as to locate the target optical cable quickly.

Simple words to understand OTDR

Optical Time Domain Reflectometer is a device used to detect failures in fiber optic links in a communications network. The operation of the device involves the production and transmission of a series of high-speed optical pulses within the fiber. Changes within the fiber create a back scatter according to the Rayleigh distribution. The pulses are then returned to the ODTR where their intensity is measured. The signal strength returned is an indication of the location and severity of the failure. ODTR is used not only for maintenance but also for installation of optical communication lines. In addition, international telephony networks also use ODTR to improve line connections.

What is SMA905 Connector in High power Fiber Optics

The designs of all “high-power” SMA905 (HPSMA905) connectors currently available are essentially the same. A metal ferrule is held tightly around the cladding of a fiber optic with a polished (or possibly cleaved) end surface. Low power SMA905 connectors have stainless steel ferrules, but since high-power SMA905 connectors are prone to overheating, many have replaced the steel with copper (or copper alloy) to exploit the thermal conduction properties of that material. The ferrule design creates several problems when considering launching a high-power beam.
